In 2026, people still wonder why some universities, organisations and institutions create specific scholarships and other funding opportunities, not just for Black students, but for African students, Chinese students, Indian students and more.
However, when it comes to Black students, if you have ever wondered why they exist, the answer is simple: access to higher education still isn’t equal for everyone. In the UK, Black students remain underrepresented in fields like law, medicine, and other professional degrees, which is why targeted scholarships matter.
These scholarships aren’t about lowering standards. They exist to help more students access the funding, support, and opportunities they deserve. For many, financial help can be the difference between applying, accepting an offer, or staying in university. That’s why these awards matter.
Whatโs available?
Check your university first
A great place to start is your university. Many UK universities offer scholarships for Black students and other underrepresented groups at undergraduate, postgraduate, and even PhD level. Check out our University Diversity Profiles and see which universities and external organisations have provided scholarships just for you. We also list scholarships for African/Caribbean international students.
Look beyond your university
There are also scholarships from charities, private funders, and organisations that support Black students directly. Some examples include:
- The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation โ supports Black British students from lower-income households.
- The Amos Bursary โ offers financial support and mentoring for young Black men in higher education.
- The Akindolie Medical Scholarship โ supports Black students studying medicine.
These are just a few examples, with more available on our Scholarships & Funding page.
Look beyond ethnicity! Apply for more than one scholarship
It doesn’t need to be said but, never forget that you can apply for more than one scholarship! One of the biggest mistakes students make is applying for only one type of funding. You can often apply for multiple scholarships at the same time, so always search widely!
Look for scholarships based on:
- Your subject.
- Your household income.
- Where you live.
- A disability.
- Your sport or talent and much more..
The more scholarships you apply for, the better your chances of getting financial support.
Scholarships for Black students exist because people and organisations wanted to create more opportunity where it has not always been equal. If you think you might be eligible, donโt wait – search, shortlist, and apply as early as you can. But never forget to cast your net wide and search for as many opportunities as you can.
