Results Day Survival Guide

Whatever Happens Next, You’ve Got Options

For many students, Results Day brings a mix of excitement, nerves and uncertainty. You may be hoping for the grades you need, preparing for a backup plan, or simply wondering what comes next.

The most important thing to remember is this: your results do not define your potential. They are one moment in your educational journey, not the end of it.

Before You Open Your Results

Take a deep breath.

Try not to compare yourself to friends or classmates before you’ve even seen your own results. Everyone’s journey is different, and social media rarely tells the full story.

If You Got the Results You Wanted 🎉

Congratulations! Take time to celebrate your achievement — you’ve earned it.

Once the excitement settles, start preparing your next chapter. Whether it’s accepting your accommodation, sorting your student finance, or just working out what you actually need for your kitchen, make a checklist to keep yourself on track.

If You’re Not Sure How to Feel 🤔

Maybe you got into a course, just not your first choice. Maybe you’re a grade off and don’t know if it matters yet. If you’re in this in-between space, that’s completely normal too — you don’t have to have it all figured out today. It’s worth speaking to your school, college, or the university directly to understand your actual options before deciding how you feel about them.

If Things Didn’t Go to Plan 💛

It’s completely normal to feel disappointed. Give yourself a moment to process how you’re feeling before making any decisions.

Remember, you still have options. Depending on your circumstances, these could include:

  • Applying through Clearing
  • Speaking to your school or college for advice
  • Requesting a review of your marks if appropriate
  • Considering a gap year or alternative pathways

Many students who don’t get the grades they expected still go on to have successful university experiences and careers.

What’s Next?

Support doesn’t stop on Results Day.

If you’re the first in your family to attend university, or you’ve faced barriers during your education, there are people ready to help you navigate what comes next. And if you’re dreading breaking the news to family who had certain expectations — or who didn’t know what to expect either — you’re not alone in that. Our “Results Day Anxiety” blog has advice on exactly this.

Universities also have dedicated teams for admissions, finance, accommodation and settling into student life. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and find support — that’s what they’re there for.

Be Kind to Yourself ❤️

However today turns out, try not to judge yourself by a single set of grades.

Success isn’t always a straight line. Many people take unexpected routes to reach their goals, and your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

Wherever you’re heading next, remember: this is the start of a new chapter, not the final page.

Good luck.
