Choosing a university is a big decision, and for Black students, it comes with an extra layer of questions that mainstream guides rarely answer: What does the student community actually look like here? Is there real institutional support, not just a diversity statement on a website? Will I be walking into a space where I can genuinely find my people?
These aren’t small concerns. In 2020, Universities UK – representing 140 institutions across the UK – published a report calling for stronger action to tackle racial harassment and improve the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic students, following an Equality and Human Rights Commission investigation into racial harassment on UK campuses. Progress since has been slow: by 2023, Universities UK reported that 45% of Black students had experienced racial harassment at university.
Race continues to shape people’s experiences in higher education – from awarding gaps to a sense of belonging on campus – and Black students are consistently underrepresented in the data, research and advice available to prospective applicants. That gap leaves too many students making one of the biggest decisions of their lives without the full picture.
StudyKin was built to close that gap directly. We bring together ethnicity statistics, diversity initiatives, student societies and scholarships in one place,so Black students can walk into their university decision with clearer eyes, better information, and the confidence that comes from knowing what to actually expect.
This information isn’t exclusive, anyone is welcome to use it. But our mission is specific: to support Black students, who are often underrepresented in mainstream advice platforms, every step of the way.
