Thinking about using UCAS Clearing?
Whether you’re feeling excited, nervous or somewhere in between, a little preparation for Clearing can make all the difference and the process less stressful.
Here are five simple tips to help you feel ready and confident on the day.
1. Have your information ready
Before you contact a university, make sure you have:
- Your exam results.
- Your UCAS ID (if you have one).
- The name of the course(s) you’re interested in.
- A notebook to make notes.
Having everything ready will make the conversation much smoother.
2. Don’t worry about what to say
Calling a university might feel intimidating, but admissions teams spend Results Day speaking to students just like you.
They’re there to help you, not to catch you out.
You could simply say:
“Hi, my name is ____. I’ve received my results today and I’m interested in your [course name]. I was wondering if you still have places available and whether my grades would be considered.”
From there, they’ll guide you through the rest of the conversation.
3. Ask questions
Having worked on a UK university Clearing hotline, we’ve spoken to many students who felt nervous about making that first call. The good news is that admissions teams expect students to have questions on Results Day, they’re there to help.
Remember, you’re choosing where you’ll spend the next few years of your life, so don’t worry about taking up anyone’s time. Take your time, ask the questions that matter to you, and make sure you have all the information you need before accepting an offer.
Some useful questions include:
- Is accommodation still available?
- What support is available for first-year students?
- Are there any scholarships or bursaries I could apply for?
- By when would I need to make my decision?
- Who can I contact if I have more questions after today’s call?
For international students, some of your questions may include: - How quickly can my CAS be issued?
- Will I have enough time to apply for my student visa before the course starts?
- What happens if my visa is delayed?
- Are there any important enrolment or accommodation deadlines?
Make sure you have noted down all deadlines, websites and contact details you might be given so you can look back on the information later on.
4. Don’t rush your decision
If more than one university offers you a place, take a little time to compare your options.
Think about the course, location, accommodation, student support, funding opportunities available and where you think you’ll feel happiest, not just the first offer you receive. 5. International students: act quickly
If you’re applying from outside the UK, contact universities as soon as possible after receiving an offer.
Ask when your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) will be issued, check student visa timelines and let the university know straight away if you think there could be any delays with your visa or travel arrangements.
